Rich in history and traditional charm, Old Homosassa is a picturesque fishing village located in Citrus County Florida. It is perhaps best known for its pre-Civil War sugar mill ruins. A chimney, boiler, and some other machinery are all that is left of Yulee Sugar Mill. The site is now a state park.

Homosassa has more to offer residents than just history, though. With a strong desire to preserve the area's natural environment, Homosassa will appeal to any nature lover and naturalist. Fishermen and boaters alike will appreciate the Homosassa River as it winds through the area. The clear spring fed waters offer some of the best freshwater fishing in the county. And don't forget about the Gulf of Mexico, just moments away.

The Homosassa Wildlife State Park attracts thousands of tourists a year and is one of the key components of Homosassa's local economy. The zoo-like park houses a variety of native wildlife and vegetation, including black bears, Florida panthers, alligators, birds, and reptiles.

The Fishbowl is the most popular attraction at the park. Here, visitors can view the West Indian manatees up close and personal from an underwater, glass-enclosed dome. Glimpse these gentle creatures as they playfully roll about in the water, sometimes even poking their faces to the glass!

The manatees are attracted to the relatively warm, 72 degree water that is pumped from the natural springs. People come from all over the globe to witness these prehistoric mammals in their natural environment.

All around Homosassa there are dive shops and boat rentals where you can rent snorkel gear and wet suit and get in the water to swim with the manatees. It is an experience you will never forget.

This city of Homosassa offers residents other recreational activities including bowling, shopping, and great restaurants. Fresh seafood can be found all throughout the area with waterfront dining available.

Homosassa is also home to several arts and crafts festivals, the Dragon Boat Festival, and you never want to miss the annual Homosassa Seafood Festival. Here you can sample the freshest catches of fish, shrimp, bay scallops, stone crab claws, fried oysters, and more.
There are many waterfront communities in Homosassa. From impressive waterfront homes to even more affordable waterfront townhomes, villas, and condos, there is sure to be something in your price range. Waterfront property in Homosassa is much more affordable than other more developed areas of coastal Florida.
